Arnold Schönbergs »Brettl-Lieder« scheinen kaum typisch für den Komponisten, erlauben jedoch manch inspirierende zeitgeschichtliche Einsicht: Die Texte sind oft mehr als gewagt, das gleiche gilt für Schönbergs Vertonungen – melodisch, harmonisch und auch pianistisch. Agnes Palmisano und Paul Gulda stellen diese Werke in den Kontext von Schönbergs deutlich von Brahms geprägtem Frühwerk wie auch seinen ersten Schritten in die Atonalität. Kontrastiert wie ergänzt wird das Programm durch Stücke aus der Blütezeit des Wiener Lieds und des Wiener Kabaretts.
Arnold Schönberg’s “Brettl-Lieder” (cabaret songs) seem hardly typical of his works, but they do allow inspiring insights into their contemporary history: the texts are frequently quite daring – and the same is true of how Schönberg set them to music, in terms of their melodic, harmonic, and also pianistic qualities. Agnes Palmisano and Paul Gulda perform these songs in the context of Schönberg’s early works, clearly influenced by Brahms, and also his first steps towards atonality. The program is supplemented and contrasted by pieces from the heyday of Viennese song and Viennese cabaret.
