Pisk, Paul Amadeus, 1893-1990

Paul Amadeus Pisk--composition student of Schoenberg in Vienna (1917-1919). He received his doctorate from the University of Vienna (1916) and graduated from the Vienna Conservatory (1919). He was a founder of the International Society for Contemporary Music, and worked as editor for the Musikblätter des Anbruch (1920-1928) and the Wiener Arbeiter-Zeitung (1921-1934). He taught music theory in Austria (through 1934) ultimately emigrating to the United States (1936). Thereafter he taught at the University of Redlands, California (1937-1951), the University of Texas at Austin (1951-1963), and Washington University in St. Louis (1963-1972). He eventually settled in Los Angeles where he continued to teach, compose, lecture, and write.
