Interactions between “Jung-Wien” artists in the years 1890–1910, with analytical commentary in written and pictorial form, plus the addition of extensive footnotes and image links. Arnold Schönberg’s “multiplex” of works (music, poetry, painting, design, technology) is presented in combination with observations by contemporaries. The decision to divide the German and English texts into different sections resulted from the fragmentary nature of the content. A set of playing cards designed by Schönberg in the style of the Wiener Werkstätte delivered the starting point for the development of an individual typeface and series of numbers owing to the interconnecting aesthetics and functionality of the cards – a new look at the past. A separately designed map of Vienna shows buildings that have strong links with Schönberg, plus their locations in modern-day Vienna. The challenge faced by the design was to create a guide in an entirely different guise. (Walter Bohatsch & Therese Muxeneder)
