Few 20th-century works have inspired as many creative, critical, and scholarly responses as Schönberg’s groundbreaking “Pierrot lunaire,” op. 21, for Sprechstimme and chamber ensemble (1912) in which he reimagined the commedia dell’arte character of Pierrot and blended old and new compositional techniques. In this seminar, “Pierrot’s” score and its interpretations by modernist, avantgarde, jazz and pop musicians and multimedia adaptations from theatre to VR across the globe are explored. Also examined is the compositional, critical, and scholarly “Pierrot” reception.
Seminar at the Center for Research on Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School at the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna
