Johann Sebastian BACH Brandenburgisches Konzert Nr. 5 D-Dur BWV 1050
Arnold SCHÖNBERG Kammersymphonie Nr. 2 op. 38

Arnold Schönberg’s Second Chamber Symphony, op. 38, which he had started composing as early as 1906, was not premiered until 1940 in New York. Just over 10 years later, an early work by Luigi Nono received its premiere at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. The audience was captivated by the rich sonic palette, which seemed to defy all expectations of a serially composed piece. Polyphony, melody, and rhythm characterise not only the music of Nono and Schönberg but also constitute the enduring appeal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.
