Arnold Schönberg is the gravitational center in this concert of multifaceted correspondences. Ullmann and Wellesz represent the stylistic variety that emerged from the Schönberg School. Zemlinsky, whom Schönberg acknowledged to be his only teacher, taught Alma Schindler around 1900, while also having a passionate affair with the Young woman. After her marriage to Gustav Mahler, Alma maintained a deep friendship with Schönberg – also remaining part of the extended family circle for the children until her death. Schönberg’s son Ronald would eventually marry Erich Zeisl’s daughter Barbara. Zeisl was born in Vienna in 1905; his work “Mondbilder” [Moon Pictures] functions as a counterpart to Schönberg’s famous melodrama cycle.
