“I can’t say it often enough: my works are twelve-tone compositions, not twelve-tone compositions!” This oft-quoted witty remark by Arnold Schönberg to his brother-in-law Rudolf Kolisch sheds a revealing light on the composer’s self-image: the essence of his art is not about style or technique but rather about genuine musical expression. The British composer Hannah Kendall and the Polish composer Tomasz Skweres probably share this conviction. Schönberg’s masterful string quartet is framed by two of their more recent contributions to the genre.
