Anton Webern’s Five Movements for String Quartet are subtle miniatures in which profound musical ideas are expressed in subtle gestures. Schönberg's former student also composed the piano quintet version of the epochal Chamber Symphony op. 9, masterfully transferring the melodic richness of this multi-layered music to the reduced instrumentation. The central works of the Viennese School are complemented by a string quartet by Maurice Ravel who celebrated his 150th birthday in March of this year. Rejected at the Prix de Rome, it soon became one of the composer's most popular pieces.
