After the songs for voice and piano in the Viennese School had gained new compositional terrain in the early 20th century, the genre subsequently opened up an unimaginably broad panorama of musical design. In this seminar these new developments will be illustrated using examples by Schönberg, Eisler, Ives, Crawford Seeger, Messiaen, Shostakovich, Aperghis and Lachenmann. The analysis entails references to historical events and popular culture of the time.
