Anton Webern is both present and absent. In 1923 he arranged Schön- berg's Chamber Symphony, op. 9 for the Pierrot Ensemble conducted by Schönberg himself. As a composition teacher in Vienna, in 1933 he gave lessons to Stefan Wolpe, whose Konzert für neun Instrumente requires a similar ensemble to Webern’s Konzert, op. 24. Both works were completed in 1934. Karl Amadeus Hartmann also studied with Webern in 1942 during his “inner exile.” Besides Schönberg, Webern and Alban Berg, the representatives of Viennese Modernism include Franz Schreker.
