In a tribute to George Gershwin in 1937, Arnold Schönberg spoke about his profound respect for the immense talent of his friend (and tennis partner) who had died so early, and also expressed “the deepest grief for the deplorable loss to music.” Gershwin showed great interest in the music of the Viennese School and kept up with the latest works by studying the scores. In 1928 he became personally acquainted with Alban Berg at a concert given by the Kolisch Quartett in Vienna, where Berg’s “Lyric Suite” was being performed. After returning to the United States, he revealed to a journalist: “One of the high spots of my visit was my meeting with Alban Berg, an Austrian ultramodernist composer almost unknown in this country.”
