Therese Muxeneder lecture
Schönberg was never “just” a composer; in addition to his many activities as a teacher, theorist, visual artist and controversial author, he was also an intellectual and moral authority for many of his students. His compositional oeuvre spans a wide range extending from late Romanticism to free atonality and dodecaphony, from chamber music to opera, and from programmatic works to absolute music. Foresight and a view of the future characterized his musical language, with which he opened up new paths for subsequent generations. Schönberg also lived through an eventful era, which he knew how to interpret as a perceptive contemporary witness with his gaze always turned towards the future.
