Hans Bethge’s collection of poems “The Chinese Flute” was an early twentieth-century bestseller that inspired numerous composers to write new works – the most notable example being Gustav Mahler’s symphonic cycle “Das Lied von der Erde,” whose finale constitutes the highlight of this concert. The half-hour movement is complemented by Anton Webern’s Lieder on texts by Bethge as well as Lieder for chamber ensemble by Arnold Schönberg and Franz Schubert.
