Arnold Schönberg’s early string quartet movements are preparatory works for a large-scale composition the young composer would only succeed in writing after lengthy attempts. Musically more than mere relics, they are brimming with expression and youthful energy. The same applies to the quartet movements of the thirty-year-old Erwin Schulhoff, whose dance-like impulse still seduces audiences today – as if they were expressly written for a concert in the garden of the Schönberg House in Mödling.
