Michelle Ziegler lecture (in German)

“Exaggerated espressivo,” selfless communication and “cliquishness”: in the interpretation of Schönberg’s piano works, the 1950s mark a period of tension in which traditions clashed with the zeitgeist. Amid this heated climate, the first pioneering recordings of Schönberg’s piano oeuvre were published, with performers such as Else C. Kraus and Eduard Steuermann. This lecture follows the developments before and after these recordings, taking the Three Piano Pieces, op. 11 as an example and creating a performance history that covers aspects of the interpretation aesthetics, performance practice, reception, and use of media.
