The Arnold Schönberg Center owns an extensive sound recording collection that represents the history of the commercial recording of Arnold Schönberg’s music from its beginnings until the present day. The collection also includes numerous records that have never been available on CD or Spotify, for example. As historical documents, they show Schönberg’s oeuvre in its huge breadth of perspectives. Besides their appeal to listeners, the cover designs and texts on the records present additional points of interest. This seminar explores these multifaceted sources and their role in the reception of Schönberg’s works, taking selected pieces as examples.
