Schönbergs »Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte« entstand inmitten des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Abrechnung mit der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft. Im Zeichen akuter Bedrohung ist das Werk zugleich bittere Satire wie kämpferisches Zeugnis des Willens zum Widerstand. Das Seminar ordnet das Werk in Schönbergs vielschichtiges Schaffen ein, beleuchtet historische Hintergründe wie auch die anspielungsreiche musikalische Struktur der Ode.
Schönberg’s “Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte” was composed in the midst of World War II as an attack on National Socialist tyranny. In times of acute danger, this work is at once bitter satire and fierce evidence of the will to resist. This seminar illuminates the work in Schönberg’s multifaceted œuvre, while also examining the historical background and the allusive musical structure of the Ode.
