Willem Mengelberg Archives (The Hague)

Collection, 1912-1939: 1 folder (60 leaves, 23 photographs)

The Willem Mengelberg Archives in the Nederlands Muziek Instituut (The Hague) has a number of items on deposit from the Willem Mengelberg Foundation, including correspondence, and the scores Mengelberg used in his conducting career. Mengelberg (1871-1951) conducted (1895-1945) the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. He was active in promoting new works by young German and Austrian composers. Schoenberg lived Holland in 1912, 1914, 1920-1921, and in 1922. Some of his correspondence with Mengelberg relating to these periods is contained in this collection. See Journal of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute 6/2 (Nov. 1982) for a description of Schoenberg's time in Holland.
