Peter Salm--at the end of World War II, Salm was in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the United States. Schoenberg contacted him in order to communicate with Schoenberg's relatives in Europe. Schoenberg knew Salm's father, the conductor Harold Byrns (1903-1977), who gave the first Los Angeles performance of Schoenberg's Op. 9 (1949). Byrns studied with Walter Gieseking, Erich Kleiber, and Leo Blech at the Sternschen Konservatorium in Berlin. Byrns worked as a conductor in Lübeck, Olenburg, and Berlin (Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper) before emigrating to the United States (1936) via Italy (1933). He founded the Los Angeles Chamber Symphony (1949), and performed Schoenberg's Moses und Aron in 1971 (Deutsche Oper).
