Paul Sacher (b. 1906)--Swiss conductor, studied at the Basel Conservatory. He commissioned or gave the first performances of contemporary works by composers such as Bartók, Hindemith, Honegger, Strauss, and Stravinsky. The Paul Sacher Stiftung was created in 1973 with the goal of collecting the most important autograph documents of 20th-century music. The archive itself opened in Basel, April 1986.
