Schönberg’s Variations for Orchestra op. 31 were recently published in the series of Universal Edition study scores entitled “Music of the 20th and 21st Century”, using the text from the Arnold Schönberg Complete Edition.
“This edition is based on the volume presented by Nikos Kokkinis as part of the Complete Edition. Its primary source is Schönberg’s personal copy of the original printed edition from 1929, in which several pitch errors – but not all – were corrected which had occurred primarily due to copying mistakes. Numerous other errors were able to be rectified by the editor using other sources – in particular the short score.”
The new series currently includes Schönberg’s Pelleas und Melisande op. 5, the Orchestral Songs op. 8, and Pierrot lunaire op. 21; the publication of a study score of the Second String Quartet op. 10 is also planned for 2012.
