Henry Cowell
1897 – 1965
Cowell wurde am 11. März 1897 in Menlo Park, Kalifornien geboren. Er erhielt früh Violinunterricht, wendete sich aber bald der Komposition zu. Ab 1910 erhielt er Klavierunterricht bei verschiedenen kalifornischen Klavierlehrern, ab 1914 studierte er Komposition bei Charles Seeger an der University of California. 1918 – 1919 leistete Cowell seinen Kriegsdienst ab. Zwischen 1923 – 1933 fanden fünf Europabesuche statt, Cowell knüpfte Kontakte mit Bartók und Webern, und wurde Schüler von Schönberg. Zur gleichen Zeit begann er intensiv außereuropäische Musik zu studieren, unter anderem unter der Anleitung Erich von Hornbostels. Ab 1941 war er als Lehrer an der New School of Social Research und am Peabody Conservatory tätig. Cowell starb am 10. Dezember 1965 in New York.
